Green Lantern's Brightest Days Honorary Mentions

The countdown of Green Lantern's greatest onscreen moments has concluded, but I would be remiss not to mention some of the runners up that didn't quite make the cut.

In Justice League Unlimited's Kid Stuff, John Stewart was de-aged into a youngling (no, that's not the cool part). For most of the series run, the Justice League series featured a John Stewart with a very practical approach to the powers of the Green Lantern ring. John typically used the ring to construct spheres around himself or his enemies, beam-blasts, and other visually simple devices.

Kid Stuff, the kid Lantern finally got to have some fun with his ring creating all sorts of imaginative constructs including a missile launching mecha. Through the entire Justice League run, this was perhaps the most fun we got to have seeing some of the creative, though not ridiculous, uses for the power ring.

Smallville's 9th season introduced the Justice Society of America, the team of which Green Lantern Alan Scott was a key member. Although the episode focused on some of the other Society member, Alan Scott was given a couple of frames of screen time, giving the hero his onscreen debut.

The episode also put on display key Lantern artifacts such as the power ring, the lantern, and the mask.

Lastly, although the Super Friends series focused on Superman, Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman (before expanding the line-up in the years to come), the All-New Super Friends Hour episode Flood of Diamonds gave Green Lantern Hal Jordan a guest appearance his first such on the long running series.

Great moments for GL, but not quite up there with the 25 best.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #1

#1 Green Lantern: First Flight

This is it. The eagerly awaited end of the countdown reveals Green Lanterns brightest day (at least to date) and its no surprise that Hal Jordan's training story as depicted in the direct to video Green Lantern: First Flight has taken the top spot.

First of all, the movie is gorgeous. GL has never looked better. The movie also plays up the rich Lantern mythology including the diverse and extensive Lantern Corps, the Guardians, Oa, a nod to Ion, the Power Battery, and the Oath.

First Flight also gave GL one of the best incarnations of Sinestro over which he would ultimately triumph. Finally, after over 40 years of appearing in other heroes shows, it was about time Green Lantern got to be the star of his own movie.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #2

Along with the Flash, Justice League: The New Frontier was Green Lantern's movie. The two heroes who so often play second fiddle to DC's "big three" got top billing here. In particular, the story focused on fighter pilot turned test pilot turned Green Lantern Hal Jordan including the classic origin involving crashed alien Abin Sur.

In the end, it wasn't Superman who saved the world, but for once, Green Lantern.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #3

#3 DC Heroes: Green Lantern: Evil is as Evil Does

This episode has the distinction of being the first onscreen appearance of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern. Sure, along with the rest of the Filmation library, this is a bit dated but it did contain many core elements of the character.

For introducing GL to the mainstream, this episode takes the #3 spot on the countdown.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #4

#4 Superman: The Animated Series: In Brightest Day

Although I must acknowledge that this episode really butchered the origin of Green Lantern Hal Jordan - or rather Kyle Rayner - that Hal Jordan was essentially eradicated from this universes existence. Having said that, the story honored both Hal and Kyle, giving the latter his first onscreen and only (to date) spotlighted appearance. This episode also introduced the Green Lantern to the DC Animated Universe paving the way for John Stewart to become a main hero in Justice League.

All of the essential elements of the Lantern mythology were here, including Oa, the Guardians, the Oath, Abin Sur, and Sinestro. The episode also introduced the Green Lantern musical theme which would continue to accompany many of John Stewart pivotal scenes in Justice League. Even though this was a Superman episode, Supes did not overshadow or take away from Kyle's heroism. In the end this was not only one of the better Superman episodes, but one of the greatest onscreen moments for the Green Lanterns.

#5 Justice League: In Blackest Night

All throughout Super Friends, even though Hal Jordan was one of the "friends" he never got to be the star of the show. Finally, in this second story of the Justice League series, the Green Lantern was front and center.

The episode not only focused on John Steward, but delved into his back story and into the world of the Green Lantern Corps and the Manhunters. In Blackest Night also opening the door for future Lantern-themed episodes during the Justice League run.

#6 Batman: The Brave and the Bold: The Eyes of Despero!

This wasn't Guy Gardner's first appearance on screen or even on The Brave and the Bold, but it was the first time he got to be a hero. The episode also teased the evil Sinestro, who in this episode was still a Corps member.

Also, we got Mogo, G'nort, Despero, the Oath, and Bat-Lantern all adding to one of the greatest Green Lantern adventures ever committed to film.

#7 Justice League: Secret Origins

Although the Green Lantern played more of a support than leading role in this particular episode, Secret Origins launched 52 episodes of Justice League and 39 episodes of Justice League Unlimited in which John Stewart was THE Green Lantern. This was also John Stewart's onscreen debut. John's inclusion in the Justice League series alerted mainstream audiences that a Green Lantern was not a single person (AKA Hal Jordan), but title for a member of a rich and diverse interstellar force.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #8

#8 Duck Dodgers: The Green Loontern

Sure, Daffy Duck could have teamed up with Superman or Batman, but no. In 2003, he joined the Green Lantern Corps in The Green Loontern. This fantastic episode put Duck Dodgers right in the center of Green Lantern mythos battling Sinestro with heaps of cameos (including Hal, Guy, and John) and plenty of respect being offered to the Lanterns.

Kilowog and Katma Tui were prominently featured as were the Guardians, Oa, and the oath. This was one amazing cartoon crossover.

#9 Challenge of the Superfriends: Secret Origins of the Superfriends

In Secret Origins of the Superfriends, the tale of Hal Jordan becoming the Green Lantern was told for the first time as a time traveling "Green Luthor" attempted to intercept the ring for himself. For the Superfriends, this was a pretty solid episode and a fitful telling of the green one's secret origin. And don't worry, in the end all was set as it was meant to be.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #11

#11 Justice League: Legends

Up until just recently when Alan Scott got a shoutout during Smallville's 9th season, the Golden Age Green Lantern had never appeared on film. However, the 2002 Justice League episode Legends, paid homage to original Justice Society members with its portray of the Justice "Guild." Guild member Green Guardsman was an obvious, though respectful tribute to the original bearer of the emerald power ring. John Stewart teaming up with one of his childhood fictional heroes was another nice touch.

#12 Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Day of the Dark Knight!

In spite of being Earth's Green Lantern in comics for years, Guy Gardner's media appearances had been limited to lineless cameos and canceled pilots. But in 2009, the Batman: The Brave and the Bold featured Guy as the the spotlighted member of the Corps and the one that would team up with Batman on several occasions.

Guys debuted in the teaser opening of Day of the Dark Knight! Even though his first appearance was brief, it finally gave Guy equal recognition with modern Lanterns Hal, John, and Kyle as a key member of the Green Lantern Corps.

#13 Justice League : The Savage Time

The true measure of a hero shouldn't be his powers, but how he acts without them. In the Justice League episode, The Savage Time, John Stewart and company go back in time to prevent meddling that allowed the Axis powers to win WWII. During the course of events, the green lantern ring ran out of juice.

Lack of powers wouldn't stop the ex-Marine from keeping on fighting. John joined up with Sergeant Rock's Easy Company where he continued to play a critical role in defeating Vandal Savage's army.

#14 Justice League Unlimited: The Return

Although Justice League Unlimited's The Return, wasn't really about the Green Lantern Corps, they did play a fairly large role in it. Not only were a slew of Corpsmen showcased, but we finally got to see Kyle Rayner again after his debut way back in the Superman animated series.

Even though it wasn't the Corps who ultimately took down AMAZO, they sure gave it their all and this excellent episode wouldn't have been the same without them.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #15

#15 Justice League: Hearts and Minds

In spite of an effective threat establishing opening, Hearts and Minds was one of the weaker entries in Justice League's second season. Still, the episode did have a few gems for fans of the Emerald Knight and particularly of the Green Lantern Corps. In fact, this episode could well have been used as a pilot for a Green Lantern Corps series. Though Kilowog and Katma Tui had been seen in previous episode's it was here that their characters were given real development. For the first time in any format, Corps members aside from the "main human" were presented heroically at a more than superficial level.

The episode also gave some details about John Stewart's training under Katma Tui and of the ringbearer's need to muster great willpower to effectively wield the ring. It was also nice see Despero from the Lantern's rogue's gallery which usually only offers up Sinestro.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #16

#16 The Batman: Ring Toss

Aside from a couple of cameo appearances, it had been over 20 years since we had seen Hal Jordan in action when he finally arrived on The Batman. The episode Ring Toss offered up a traditional showdown between arch nemesis Hal Jordan and Sinestro and gave some shout outs to Hal's history as Sinestro's student and to Hal's day job as a test pilot, to which a starstruck Robin remarked, "even his secret identity is cool."

Unfortunately, the Penguin ended up with the ring for a time but was dealt with in fairly short order after a bit of a Sinestro smack down.

While it was annoying seeing a buffoon like the penguin able to use the power ring, at least he never was really able to master it. Seeing the Dark Knight wielding the ring, albeit briefly, pretty much canceled out the whole Penguin affair. In the end, the episode paid tribute to Hal Jordan, the ring's true master and it was Hal who ultimately turned the tide of the fight.

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #17

#17 Batman: The Brave and the Bold: The Revenge of the Reach!

Revenge of the Reach is just a good old fashioned duke em out clash episode of television that expanded Green Lantern mythology by establishing The Reach as an ancient adversary of the Green Lantern Guardians. With plenty of creative constructs and some cameos by fan favorite Lanterns this episode was just a lot of fun.

Even though Batman: The Brave and the Bold is a team-up show, In this episode, the Caped Crusader felt like a bit of an add-on to an adventure that could have been handled by the Lanterns without any "back-up."

Green Lantern's Brightest Days #18

#18 Static Shock: Fallen Hero

In some ways this is a throw away story- a simple Lantern vs Sinestro romp - though I am not really sure if Sinestro's plan to ruin GL's rep really made sense. I mean, his time has to be worth more than just robbing banks in Dakota, right? At least, even though Static helped out, it was John Stewart who actually defeated Sinestro in the end. The reason this entry makes the list is that Green Lantern's appearance on Static solidified GL's heroic status in the DC animated universe. Of the League members spotlighted on Static Shock, GL was the only one whose name didn't start with "super" or "bat" and making him a personal hero of Static's was a nice touch.
