The Dark Knight and DC Nation Return

This week in DC animation is sure to put a smile on your face. On Tuesday, The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 hits store shelves adapting the first two chapters of the landmark graphic novel. Even though I am much more looking forward to Part 2, this first movie stands remarkably well on its own. Even though I dare speak heresy by saying The Dark Knight Returns as a story is a bot overrated, this adaptation is pretty well done and certainly wasn't watered down for younger audiences. But speaking of the younglings, this week also promised the long awaited return new content to DC Nation.

First Look at Static, Deathstroke, and Arsenal from Young Justice

Also fresh off of Comic Con is a sneak peek at upcoming episodes of Young Justice: Invasion which gives a first look at Static Shock who appears to be joining the team! Its also a pleasant surprise to see Deathstroke joining the villain's roster and Arsenal beginning his training. Looks like the next batch of episodes are going to be amazing.

Is Starfire Coming to Young Justice? - Debunked -

I am really confused right now. There is an image floating around the interweb that appears to show Starfire alongside Nightwing on Young Justice. That would be great, BUT is it for real? The main reason for me to think its a hoax is that Nightwing has reverted to the Discowing costume. Could this be a flashback? I suppose...

Is This Nightwing From Young Justice?

Although its origins are unclear, this image has been bouncing around tumblr. If legit, this could very well confirm a time jump between seasons and a the two-Robin theory, well one Robin since the other would have graduated to the Nightwing identity. Only three days until the Young Justice season 2 premier addresses some of these rumors.

UPDATE: Yes it is official!

Young Justice Promo Reveals Joker et al

During the season premier of Batman: The Brave and the Bold on Friday, a quick promo ran revealing a line-up of villains slated to appear on Young Justice. The baddies include Count Vertigo, Poison Ivy, Black Adam, Wotan, Ultra-Humanite, Atomic Skull and the Joker. Its a pretty impressive group of rogues and surprisingly these are not even the leaders of the shrouded organization The Light (headed by Vandal Savage, Ra's al Ghul, Lex Luthor, Queen Bee, Ocean Master, and The Brain). These are just the "mid-level managers."

Retrospective 2010 - Part 4

RED

In October, RED aka Retired Extremely Dangerous arrived in theaters and outperformed fellow DC owned (Homage comics) actioner The Losers to the tune of $89 million.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

The bigger event in October was the countdown to and debut of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Disney released one 5 minute micro episode online each day for the 20 days leading up to the series premier. Avengers hasn't held back, airing 16 of its scheduled 52 total episode run in just 2 months giving various main and secondary characters a chance at the spotlight.

Superman / Shazam! The Return of Black Adam

In November, Superman / Shazam! The return of Black Adam headlined a rare misstep release from DC animation. The double short (20 minutes) itself was well done, though once again Captain Marvel and Superman are hardly lesser known heroes who were indicated as the targets for these shorts. The problem was that the DVD only contained this short and "extended" versions of the previous 3 shorts whcih had already been used to encourage purchase of pricier special edition releases throughout the year. In all the full priced purchase got you at most 60 minutes of content and at worst 20 minutes of content. The extended versions of the the shorts were also a joke as someone would have to watch them side by side to discern any difference. Sales were modest, and it looks like the shorts may be on hold, which is a shame becasue it was the marketing, not the quality, that fell short.

Megamind

2010 may have been the year of the super villain. The Summer offered up a huge hit with Despicable Me and Dreamworks hoped for a similar success with Master / Oober / MegaMind in which a super villain had to become a hero to thwart a bigger villain. In the end, the movie was not a big hit, earning nearly $150 million, and less overseas, in a very competitive computer animated market making a sequel unlikely.

Young Justice
The highlight of the Fall for me had to be the debut of the Young Justice animated series. The double length premiere saw Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Superboy (along with Miss Martian) forming a covert team under the supervision of the Justice League. The show has fantastic animation and a serious tone that played perfectly. The creator is fresh off The Spectacular Spider-Man series, the Web-Head's finest to date, and hopefully this lives up to that standard.

Firebreather

Following the debut of Young Justice, Cartoon Network also released the computer animated Firebreather movie based on a comic series about a kid with a dragon dad. I didn't catch this one.

Joker's Funhouse

One last gem that shouldn't be overlooked was the online animated "commercial" for Super Friends toys from Fischer-Price. The animated short titled The Joker's Playhouse is a work of genius and hopefully will find its way to DVD somehow soon.

And that my friends is a wrap. Twas a busy year but next year is going to be even busier. Imagine 2010, but instead of Vertigo and Homage Comics' unpowered "heroes" getting movies we will have Marvel and DC busting out some top tier super powered heroes. It should be fun.

Young Justice in Action

Comic Con has scored us a first look at the Young Justice Animated series with some awesome footage and interviews. I also managed to capture this image of the "senior" Justice League as they will appear on the show. This show looks very promising.

Update: Young Justice is Coming

UPDATE:
Below is the official description. Looks like it will be Superboy not young Superman and Arrowette is now Artemis. Hopefully ate some point Wonder Girl will be allowed to appear.

Young Justice - In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice — Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will find out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero. This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers.

According to Toonzone, an announcement for the animated Young Justice series is imminent. and we even got a new, non-leaked image. Looks like a pretty good line-up though I am not sold on the look for Martian Girl. I also wonder, given all the legal tanglings with Superboy, if that is actually Superboy as opposed to the Legion of Superheroes solution of just using a young Superman. Can't wait to hear more about this series.

Young Justice Animated Series - First Look

Presenting Arrowette, member of the upcoming animated series Young Justice based on the DC comic of the same name. The image and the following description come from the blog of voice actress Stephanie Lemelin.

WOW. Ok… I am beyond thrilled to announce that I was recently cast in the new animated series, YOUNG JUSTICE LEAGUE, based on the famous (and awesome!?) DC Comics. I seriously could not be more excited about being welcomed into this amazing family… what a fantastic way to start the new year! I will be voicing the character of Arrowette (see ridiculously hot avatar below!!! um, could I love her anymore?) as well as several supporting cast members… Due to the extreme popularity of this series, however, that’s about all I can say… for now. So excited, this is really a dream come true for me, I have ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A SATURDAY MORNING CARTOOON!!! Woohoo!

Anyways, this leak comes on the heels of online rumors about this series AS WELL AS a CG Green Lantern Series in the works. From what I have been able to glean, Young Justice will feature Nightwing, Aqualad, Superboy/Connor Kent, Impulse, Arrowette and Miss Martian. DC does it again!
