Along with Friday night's announcement that DC would 2012 would see the release of a two-part animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, DC also announced the summer release of a movie titled Superman vs The Elite. The question on everyone's mind now is, "Who are The Elite?"
The Elite were first introduced in 2001's Action Comics #775 in a Superman one-shot titled, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" Whether or not the movie will follow that story remains to be seen, but its a good guess. The Elite consisted of team leader Manchester Black, his sister Vera Black, Coldcast, Menagerie, Hat, and Bunny. In the story, The Elite, "heroes" made famous for viciously and publicly killing their foes eventually had a showdown with the Man of Steel over their extreme methods.
The Elite went on to form Justice League Elite along with the Flash and Green Arrow as an unsanctioned team devised to take on global threats.Certainly sounds interesting but I am surprised at this choice. Even though these characters were introduced just 10 years ago, they have pretty much fallen into obscurity. Perhaps DC has plans to reintroduce them. In any case, I am please that there will be another Superman movie. All Star Superman was fantastic and even Superman Doomsday had some great parts. I am just a little surprised that of all the Superman stories out there, they chose this. Hopefully, they are saving Superman Red Son for another day.
