I've actually been on a Zorro kick lately. I've picked up the Disney tv series and the 1940 Mark of Zorro. Also the Blu-Rays for the recent films.
ReplyDeleteYou may want to include these in your list.
Zorro (1990) (TV series 1990-1993)
Zorro and Son (1983) (TV mini series)
Zorro the Gay Blade (1981) (movie)
Zorro (1957) (TV series 1957-1959)
Ghost of Zorro (1949) (movie serial)
Son of Zorro (1947) (movie serial)
Zorro's Black Whip (1944) (movie serial)
Zorro's Fighting Legion (1939) (movie serial)
Zorro Rides Again (1937) (movie serial)
The Bold Caballero (1936) (movie)
Don Q Son of Zorro (1925) (movie silent)
Wow, your aid is much appreciated. I had no idea there were so many Zorro shows.
DeleteAlso the upcoming Joss whedon TV live action TV series S.H.I.E.L.D.
ReplyDeleteToo true!
Deleteyou left out the Super Friends and a few other cartoons, and Judge Dredd is DC but that is a sweet list.
ReplyDeleteIf you include the pre-Superman properties, why not include post-Superman properties, who obviously preceded Superman's gaining ubiquitousness, why not post-Superman properties?
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, I find it amusing that people refer to properties such as Zorro as "comic book heroes". These pre-Superman property would perforce not derive or especially resemble the Superman influenced properties (e.g. usually not wearing spandex or having metahuman powers). However, how often do people refer to post-Superman properties such as Luke Skywalker, who obviously debuted after Superman grew ubiquitous in the same way. I would find it interesting what the reaction would occur if someone referred to Luke Skywalker as a "comic book hero", as he does have paranormal powers.
Also, what of Robocop (admittedly based on Iron Man)?
Yes, obviously the list is somewhat subjective. I can definitely see the argument for including Robocop. I do understand what you are saying about Star Wars, but I think that belongs more to the Fantasy genre than to the realm of superheroes and comic books.
Delete"I do understand what you are saying about Star Wars, but I think that belongs more to the Fantasy genre than to the realm of superheroes and comic books".
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your patience in reading my comments, but since Superman (an extraterrestrial), Wonder Woman (an Amazon with actual powers from the Olympian pantheon), the Avengers (which features member of the Asgardian pantheon), and so forth in the genre, this genre largely forms part of the fantasy genre anyway. In fact, I would not anticipate that someone who enjoys Star Wars and wants a similar experience would enjoy an episode of the Lone Ranger radio show, yet you have various Lone Ranger adaptations listed which lacked the paranormal.
The Lone Ranger has largely not had peculiar adventures. John Clute decided to note him in the Masked Avenger entry in The Encyclopedia of Fantasy as outside of the fantasy genre (as well as his grand-nephew the Green Hornet, the Scarlet Pimpernel and Zorro).
