In 1948, Superman made his live action debut in a series of 15 serials running over 4 hours. This serial told Superman's origin of escaping the doomed planet Krypton and being raised as Clark Kent on a farm. After the death of the farm couple who raised him, Clark joined the Daily Planet to be close to the news. As Superman he responded to emergencies including the plot of the serial's central villain, the Spider Lady.
As mentioned in the Crisis of Infinite Episode, for technical and budgetary reasons, the flight sequences were all
done with animation.
But audiences didn't mind. The serials were a huge hit paving the way for a sequel.
Check back next week for another chapter in The Super History of Superman.
