Onscreen History of Nick Fury

Colonel Nicholas Joseph "Nick" Fury, currently Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. first appeared in 1963's Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 as a World War II army hero. Months later he was presented as a modern day super spy and in 2002, he was reimagined in Marvel's Ultimate line of books as an African American General modeled after actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Nick made his onscreen debut in the 1990's Iron Man series where he led S.H.I.E.L.D.

Near the end of the X-Men animated series run, World Warrior Fury appeared along side Wolverine and Captain America in the episode Old Soldiers.

Fury also appeared in several episodes on the 1990's Spider-Man animated series, once again as an affiliate of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In 1998, the made for TV movie, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. pitted Fury against rival in the evil org HYDRA.

In 1999's Spider-Man Unlimited premier, Nick Fury made a brief appearance before Spidey set off for an alternate universe.

Fury was a frequent party crasher in the animated X-Men: Evolution series.

The Ultimate version of Fury first appeared in 2006's direct to video adaptation of the first arc of The Ultimates in Ultimate Avengers.

Ultimate Fury returned in the follow-up movie Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther.

In 2008, things got serious for Agent Fury as Sam Jackson took the role of the character based on his own image. In a secret post credits scene in Iron Man, Fury announced that a team was being put together and the Marvel cinematic universe was born.

2009's Wolverine and the X-Men introduced a Nick Fury inspired by both the Ultimate and the main continuity versions of the character.

Fury also joined the ranks of Iron Man: Armored Adventures...

... and The Super Hero Squad Show.

Nick Fury played an increased role in Iron Man 2 AKA The Avengers 0.5 along with co- S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Black Widow.

Up next, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes once again placed Fury at the head of the spy organization.

Making another post credits appearance in 2011's Thor, Fury introduced the cosmic cube which would play a role later in the summer in Captain America.

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Fury would welcome Cap to the modern age in the center of Times Square.

In 2012's Ultimate Spider-Man, Fury will play a key role in the training of Spidey.

And in May 2012 The Avengers will finally assemble under the leadership of Agent Fury.
