Onscreen History of Doctor Strange

The Internets have been ablaze with rumors that Marvel studios is pushing forward with a live action Dr. Strange movie. Marvel has long been trying to make Strange a star, but it probably wouldn't be until at least 2014 that there would be an opening in Marvels live action film slate. And believe it or not a feature film would not be the Sorcerer Supreme's first movie. Shall we take a look at the good doctor's onscreen history?

Dr. Strange first appeared in 1963's Strange Tales #110 and remains Marvel's chief mystical character. Stephen Strange began as a cocky surgeon who lost the of use of his hands after suffering an accident. He sought a mystical solution to his troubles which took him on a journey becoming the Master of the Mystic Arts and the Sorcerer Supreme.

Strange made his onscreen debut in a live action made for TV movie which debuted in 1978, about the same time as the Captain America movie and the Incredible Hulk series. Had the movie been better received, it was intended to serve as a pilot for a Dr. Strange series.

Doctor Strange returned to television in 1981's animated Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends in the episode 7 little Superheroes.

After his guest appearance with Spidey, it would be 13 lucky years until Strange would again appear, this time during the X-Men animated series. During the Phoenix Saga, Dr. Strange made a quick cameo appearance (along with some other Marvel characters) indicating the ripple effect that the cosmic Phoenix force had upon Earth.

In 1996, in the Spider-Man animated series episode title Doctor Strange, Spidey and Strangey team-up up against the combined forces of Baron Mordo and Dormammu.

In 1997,  Strange guest starred on yet another Marvel animated series, this time in the Mind Over Anti-Matter episode of the Incredible Hulk. In the episode "Dr. Peculiar" and She-Hulk joined forces to journey into the mind of the Jade Giant.

After years of paying his dues as a supporting hero, Dr. Strange was given another shot at headlining in 2007 when he starred in the direct to video movie Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme. In the retelling of Strange's origin story, the hero faced off against none other than the Lord of Chaos, Dormammu.

In 2009, the Sorcerer Supreme once again faced off against the evil Dormammu during the Super Hero Squad Show animated series.

In 2010's direct to video Planet Hulk, Doctor Strange made a brief appearance as a member of the mysterious Illuminati who conspired to banish the Hulk to another world. Is it possible Strange's next appearance will be in a big budget live action film? If only he were real, he could possible tell us what his future holds.
