Because the Legion just wasn't evil enough they sought the power boost of the monolith of evil. I don't understand how the Legion could shrink and steal the entire United Nations, but they couldn't get past a lava monster on their own.
This one was just okay. There wasn't any big twist as there had been in some of the best of the Legion of Doom episodes and so in the end this one ends up fairly forgettable. I guess to be accurate there was a twist that the monolith was only as evil as the user (which was not consistent with the episode), but that was pretty disappointing.
