Next on my wish list is the animated Shazam! show from 1981, the rest of the Super Friends, and a season set release for the current Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Hopefully those announcements will be coming soon.

Superhero DVD Updates
A couple of new superhero DVDs are on the horizon. Here's the lowdown with some box art.
On January 5, 2010, the first season of Super Friends (with non-powered Wendy and Marvin) finally makes its way to DVD. Oddly, this first season of the show was not the first released, nor will it probably be the last. For some reason, the folks at WB thought a good release order would be 3, 4, 7, 8, 2 part 1, 2 part 2, 6 part 3, and now 1 part 1 (1 part 2, 5, and 6 parts 1 and 2 remain to be announced)
Last but not least the Planet Hulk DVD will arrive on February 2, 2010. This is the 7th in the Marvel Comics line of DtVs.

Retrospective 1983
Superman III
Superman III is 1983's superhero show that most people will remember (although they may cringe at its mentioning). Sadly, at least in my mind, this marked the end of the first golden age of superhero films. The Superman series had been phenomenal. Superman I was epic, and II even with its flaws stands as my favorite Superman movie to date. Superman III took a respectable hero and surrounded him with bumbler and idiots. Just check out this "comedic" opening sequence where apparently everyone in Metropolis is a freaking moron:
Having said that, at least Superman III had some redeeming aspects. Dark Superman was an interesting turn, and the Superman vs Clark Kent fight was pretty cool even though it may not really make sense. Also, the part when the supercomputer turns that chick into a robot used to freak me out.
So, even though Superman III was a big step down for the franchise, it didn't kill the film series and I would say it deserves to exist (hey, its embezzlement plot even inspired the plot for Office Space). The same can't really be said for 1983's other offering.
The Return of Captain Invincible
Oh dear. Part comedy, part action, and part musical... Not really a good mix. The Return Of Captain Invincible (don't mind the title, this isn't a sequel) was about a hero forced into retirement by McCarthy (because of his red "commie" cape and for flying without a license). Years later, he was called back into service when Mr. Midnight stole a government hypno-ray. Its just really not a very good movie, the songs are weird and not very good, and its hard to tell if this is supposed to be a parody or not. I mean, its about as silly as Superman III which wasn't a parody (or at least wasn't supposed to be). Lets just say its no accident most people haven't heard of this one.
So, 1983 wasn't a great year for heroes. And even I, who have a soft spot for Superman III, admit the genre would probably only be helped if this year were erased from the time line.

Musical History of Batman
On October 30th, the long awaited musical episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold will air on Cartoon Network. The much hyped episode will feature the Music Meister, voiced by Dr. Horrible himself. But, this is not the first time Batman has been teamed with music.
In his many iterations, Batman has been given various and memorable theme music. Though I wont go through them all, I will list some of the best. Perhaps best of all was 1989's by Danny Elfman:
Also memorable were the 1960's series theme:
and the theme to The Dark Knight:
In addition to the themes to movies and TV series, Batman himself has actually had a few close encounters with music. In 2000, the Batman Beyond episode Out of the Past featured performances in a Broadway style Batman Musical:

In 2003, the Chase Me special feature with the Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman DVD on the film, featured a Batman and Catwoman dialogueless short set to jazz and piano music:
In 2004, the This Little Piggy episode of Justice League Unlimited featured Batman settling a debt with Circe by singing Am I Blue:
Though the Brave and the Bold episode, having already aired internationally, can be found on YouTube, I have posted the songs from the episode here. Enjoy. Mayhem of the Music Meister:

Evolution of the Batman (and Robin) - Batman on Scooby Doo
In all, Batman and Robin's appearances on Scooby Doo were nothing to write home about, but considering they were all the onscreen exposure the Dynamic Duo received for several years I presume they were a pretty big hit at the time.
Up Next: The Super Friend
Batman Serial * Batman and Robin Serial * Batman '66 TV * Batman '66 Movie * Batman with Robin the Boy Wonder * Batman on Scooby Doo

Howard the Duck (1986) - Film Capsule
Heroes: Howard
Villains: Dark Overlords
Diabolical Scheme: A Dark Overlord wants to use the same space laser that brought Howard to Earth from a parallel dimension to bring his Overlord friends to Earth.
Coolest Moment(s): I guess since the worst elements are what makes this a camp classic, the "coolest moments" are endless duck puns (ala "I know Quack-Fu") and of course duck boobs.
Worst Moment: I mean, the DVD case claims "fun for the whole family." That really doesn't imply duck boobs.
Opening Weekend: $5,070,136
Total Domestic Box Office: 16,295,774
Adjusted Domestic Total: around $32,092,000

Review in 50 Words or Less: The premise isn't the only thing wrong with this movie, though it is a big problem. Having a duck face off with a demon after trying to seduce Marty McFly's mom is bizarre, but working in zany Quack-Fu showdowns with street thugs, then clubbers, then truckers was just tiresome.

Super Spoof
As much as I hate giving publicity to The Family Guy, the lampooned Super friends title sequence cant go without a mention. Compare the original with the "hilarious" frame by frame reimagining. You know, that's the thing about Family Guy, simply referencing something old, does not equal funny. There is nothing clever here. Though I guess it does get you plenty of free advertising. Oh, and they didn't even mention the Wonder Twins, the most obvious thing to spoof...

Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (2006) - Film Capsule
Heroes: The Teen Titans
Villains: Brushogun... or someone else?
Diabolical Schemes: Brushogun is releasing colorful monsters in Tokyo causing tension between the Titans and the Tokyo Troopers who insist they don't need any help.
Review in 50 Words or Less: Now this is an example of a wasted opportunity. Rather than building on established threats from the series, this movie introduced a new and fairly lame villain. There are decent amounts of humor, but events in this movie have no effect on the broad tale of the Teen Titans.
